Description

The Center for Victims of Torture is seeking a Mental Health
Professional/Trainer to work in the Democratic Republic of Congo with
individuals who have suffered torture and war trauma. The position has a
one-year renewable agreement.

Organization:

The Center for Victims of Torture exists to heal the wounds of torture on
individuals, their families, and their communities and to stop torture
worldwide. We work to build healing communities where torture survivors feel
welcomed, protected and healed.

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Oversee psychosocial mental health intervention for communities, in the form
of individual counseling, group therapy and community/large group training
& activities.

2. Design and carryout training programs for psychosocial counselors –
including on-going training and supervision.

3. Carryout needs assessment in communities to determine appropriate mental
health interventions for people who have been tortured and/or traumatized by
war, to include identification of target population, appropriate program
intervention models and program sites.

4. Participate in the design and implementation of a program evaluation.

Qualifications:

Advanced degree in Psychology or Counseling. Masters degree or equivalent
required. Fluency in French or Swahili. Extensive experience providing
psychotherapy to individuals and groups. Understanding of and experience
implementing culturally appropriate mental health interventions, including
individual, group and community-based approaches for people who have suffered
torture and trauma. Experience with gender-based violence highly desirable.
Understanding of and experience developing curriculum and providing training
for mental health counselors using adult experiential learning activities and
training of trainers, and providing training on sensitisations on the effects
of trauma and war. Experience working in developing countries. (Experience
working in Africa preferred.) Experience
supervising mental health counselors. Skilled at carrying out needs assessment
and program evaluations. Flexibility and adaptability to work in unpredictable,
politically unstable, isolated environment, lacking in amenities. Demonstrated
flexibility to adapt to changing requirements and needs. Skilled at working as
a member of a team.

Language Requirement: Fluency in French or Swahili
