Diss Express – UK group to raise money for Congo victims

Members of the Amazon Young Women's Project, which is based in Loughborough, decided to take action after watching a BBC Three documentary about the treatment of women and children in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The group, also known as the Amazons, is run by Leicestershire County Council's Youth Service and is appealing for people across the county to organise events and help raise money for the cause.

The group is hoping to raise cash for The City of Joy – a project building a sanctuary for women and children with living accommodation, a hospital and education facilities.

Janet Holland, a youth development worker, said she was appalled after watching the programme, The World's Most Dangerous Place for Women.

"I was appalled when I saw the programme and when I showed it to the Amazons, some of them cried," she said.
