19.04.11 RNW – DR. Congo truck crash 'kills 32, mostly children'
The driver of the truck carrying planks of wood lost control of the
vehicle at around 8:30 am (0630 GMT) as it was going down a hill near
the main eastern city of Goma, the Bukumu village chief, Mwami Butsitsi,
told AFP.
"There were a lot of children fetching water," Butsitsi said, adding that the "driver is alive, but seriously injured."
The night before the accident, the lorry driver spent the night near
Bukumu because of a "problem with the brakes" of his vehicle, the chief
added. He was coming from Rutshuru, 60 kilometres (37 miles) north of
Goma, and headed for the main town of Nord-Kivu province.
Road accidents are frequent in the DR Congo because of the bad state
of both highways and vehicles, which are often overloaded with
passengers perching on the goods.
In early November last year, 39 people were killed when a truck
carrying about 100 passengers crashed on the road between the capital
Kinshasa and the central town of Kananga. The driver was found to have
been drunk.
