29 04 13 EurAc demands Mary Robinson commitment to sustainable peace process in the Great Lakes region
The
population in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been victim of continuous
violence for the last twenty years. EurAc is convinced that the proposed
comprehensive approach that looks at regional as well as national dimensions of insecurity and conflict is an important
tool to address the ongoing instability and violence in the region..
At
the occasion of her first visit to the Great Lakes region, EurAc addresses a
letter to Mary Robinson to draw her attention to a number of priorities
identified in cooperation with its Congolese partners. “The recent signature
of the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework on 24 February in Addis Ababa
represents a tangible opportunity for progress towards stabilization and peace
in the region, however a clear implementation plan is needed including the
identification of clear roles for key actors in the region” said EurAcs
President Joost van Puijenbroek. For EurAc it will be important that Mary
Robinson will commit to ensure active participation of all stakeholders in the
implementation of national and regional oversight mechanisms.
Moreover
“ civil society partners in the Great Lakes region need to be given the
opportunity to be effectively involved in the mechanisms of control and
monitoring of the Framework Agreement to make sure the populations views are
heard and integrated in any specific action Mary Robinson will take” added
Donatella Rostagno, EurAcs Executive Secretary.
