08 11 13 AFP: Wounded M23 rebels crossed into Rwanda: Red Cross
"The
total number is 95 wounded M23 rebels… 19 crossed over last week, yesterday
we received 51 and today an additional 25," Angelique Murungi of the
Rwandan Red Cross told AFP.
"We
give them blankets, first aid etc and the International Committee of the Red
Cross takes them to hospital and takes care of their medical
requirements," she said.
Murungi
said all of the wounded insurgents are being treated at the hospital in the
town of Rubavu, formerly known as Gisenyi, which
lies in northwestern Rwanda
on the border with DR Congo.
Rwanda has been accused by the United
Nations of backing the M23 but has consistently denied the charge.
Some
1,500 M23 rebels have fled the DR Congo and surrendered to the authorities in
neighbouring Uganda,
a Ugandan army officer said.
Rebels
chief Sultani Makenga is also in the hands of the Ugandan army, according to
another senior Ugandan officer, though it is not clear whether he surrendered.
