Since
1999, when he founded the hospital PANZI in Bukavu (DRC), Dr. Denis
Mukwege supports women victims of rapes, sexual violence and suffering
serious gynecological disorders. He has discovered in the east of the
DRC, a new pathology that will deeply mark the rest of his career: the
voluntary and planned destruction of women's genitals. He then let the
world know that sexual barbarism against women in eastern Congo, where
rape is used as a weapon of war, denouncing the authors during his
speech. To cope with this epidemic volunteer, he has specialized in the
surgical repair of vaginal obstetric fistula. This support women victims
of sexual violence is holistic. It covers areas as physical,
psychological, economic and legal. On the medical side, he is recognized
as one of the world's fistula specialist. On 25 October 2012, Mukwege
is victim of aggression as he heads to his house in the center of
Bukavu. The guardian of his house is shot at close range after  have
alerted to danger, his car was burned and Mukwege is tied, but the
locals are doing to his rescue and he is safe and sound. 

Since then, he lives in exile in Europe, with his wife and two
daughters, but his greatest wish is to return to Bukavu to continue to
exercise safely.
