02 11 13 Xinhua: Uganda investigates DR Congo's bombing of its territory
Some officers
have moved to the border, and the military "are further studying" the
incident, said Uganda's
military spokesman Lt. Col. Paddy Ankunda.
On
Wednesday, a military helicopter of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC),
fired a bomb and shot with a machine gun as it was flying along the common
border, injuring five Ugandan people at Maziba
Trading Center
in the town of Bunagana in southwestern Uganda.
The
Ugandan government on Thursday summoned the DRC ambassador and the UN
representative stationed in Kampala,
protesting what it called a Congolese aggression.
"Uganda will
appreciate a formal explanation from the DRC government and the UN on the
circumstances surrounding the bombing of her territory. Uganda has a
duty and responsibility to protect its territory and her citizens, and
therefore seeks assurances that such violations will not occur again," the
Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Uganda holds that the helicopter was in a
combined forces operation by the Congolese troops and the UN as they pursued
the M23 rebels along the common border.
Congolese
troops in recent days have overrun M23 rebel bases in the east region
of the DRC, forcing some of the rebel fighters to flee to Uganda.
