20.01.11 IMF Executive Board Completes Fourth Review Under Nation?s ECF Arrangement and Approves U.S.$1.9 Million Disbursement

The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) today completed the fourth review of the Republic of Congo’s economic performance under a program supported by the Extended Credit Facility (ECF). The Board’s decision enables the immediate disbursement of an amount of SDR 1.2 million (about US$1.9 million), bringing total disbursements under the ECF to the Republic of Congo to SDR 6.0 million (about US$9.4 million).

After 10 years in office, and having failed to deliver in his 2006 election manifesto, President Joseph Kabila has resorted to desperate measures in the effort to hang on power in the upcoming elections. In utter contempt to the country constitution, the presidential political family has engaged in a dangerous move to review the election laws embodied in the constitution, which entails that from November 2011 presidential election there will no longer be a second round to claim victory regardless of the result.
