The UN Security Council will hold emergency talks Monday on a new surge in fighting in eastern DR Congo in which a UN peacekeeper was killed, diplomats said as government troops cleared rebels from strategic positions in the country's restive east.

United Nations — The U.N. Security Council met Monday to discuss the situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where fighting between M23 rebels and the army flared over the past few days, resulting in the death of one U.N. peacekeeper and the displacement of several thousand Congolese.

A new front opened up Saturday as fighting raged between Congolese troops and rebels on the second day of a fresh flare-up that has prompted international calls for restraint.

President Jacob Zuma will arrive in Kinshasa on Tuesday for a two-day state visit aimed at strengthen relations between South Africa and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
