U.N. agencies say civilians have been victims of the latest violence in the eastern DRC. Fighting between government forces and two rebel groups — as well as local, ethnic violence — is also causing more displacement.

The United Nations refugee agency today said it is assisting refugees that have fled to Burundi from the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s South Kivu province after ongoing deadly clashes along the border between the two countries over the past two weeks. In a news briefing in Geneva, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said that over the past 12 days some 1,500 people – about 60 per cent of them children – have fled from the Sange, Mutalule, and Rwanena areas of the Ruzizi Plain in South Kivu into Burundi.

The UN has opened an investigation into reports that its troops killed two Congolese civilians during protests in the eastern city of Goma, amid fighting with rebels.

The United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo said Sunday it has opened a probe after residents accused UN peacekeepers of killing two people who tried to storm its base in the restive eastern city of Goma.

The State Department condemned attacks by the M23 that killed at least three people in Congo's eastern city of Goma on Saturday. It also expressed concern over reports by the United Nations of shelling by the M23 into Rwanda territory.

The United States has said it is alarmed by an escalation in fighting in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo between M23 rebels and Congolese soldiers, and has again called on neighbouring Rwanda to stop supporting the rebels.
