UK Foreign Office staff who had been working in Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo are to leave the city following heavy fighting in the area, the department has said.

(Reuters) – The head of the U.N. mission in Congo on Thursday ordered peacekeeping troops to act to protect civilians after shelling hit the city of Goma in renewed fighting between the army and M23 rebels.

GOMA — After a three-week lull, heavy fighting has resumed outside Goma in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. M23 rebels and the DRC army blame each other for renewing hostilities. The battle began Wednesday night and continued into Thursday.
