July 23 (Bloomberg) — The U.S. Securities and Exchange
Commission rule requiring companies to disclose whether any
“conflict minerals” are used in their products was upheld by a
federal court in Washington.

EASTERN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO — M23 rebels in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo are trying to strengthen their grip on areas under their control as they come under attack by the Congolese army. The residents of rebel-held towns in eastern Congo, however, are growing weary of the ongoing conflict.

M23 withdrew from Goma in the first days of December 2012. In the days and weeks after their retreat, several international initiatives were launched which eventually crystallized in the signing of the Framework Agreement of Addis Abeba in February.

All serious analysis of the causes of conflict in the DRC has long
emphasised the centrality of internal problems, mainly the state’s
lack of capacity to exercise control over its entire territory and the
related failure to secure monopoly over the use of force.

Fighting has cooled between the M23 and the Congolese army––after almost a week of fighting, the front line has been calmer now for the past three days. The Congolese army has been able to advance and retake some ground, and UN observers and journalists on the ground suggest that their performance has been better this time than during the November fighting, when Goma fell. (However, the reports that the UN is holding the army back appear to be bogus; Congolese officers told me the reason they hadn't gone on the offensive was Kinshasa hadn't given them the order.)

(Reuters) – U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has asked Rwanda's government for evidence to support its allegation that U.N. peacekeepers in Congo discussed collaboration with Hutu rebels linked to the 1994 Rwandan genocide, a U.N. spokesman said on Friday.

LONDON — Tree loss in the Congo Basin rainforest is slowing down, according to a new study published Monday. The Congo Basin rainforest is the world's second largest, after the Amazon, and scientists say the study is good news for the global environment.

Up to 160,000 refugees are sheltering in camps around the town of Goma, capital of the eastern province of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), according to UN sources.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Democratic Republic of Congo counterpart Joseph Kabila met Thursday morning to discuss matters of mutual interest.
