Prof.Bas de Gaay Fortman is a member of the Committee on Developmental Co-operation of the Netherlands Advisory Council on International Affairs, former member of the Dutch Parliament (1971-1991), former professor in Africa (Zambia), emeritus professor of Political Economy at the Institute for Social Studies in The Hague, and currently professor of Political Economy of Human Rights at Utrecht University.
